Computer Requirements

Civil and Environmental Engineering courses tend to be computer intensive and make use of many software programs for modeling, analysis and design. Having a modern computer able to run this software is critical for your success. We recommend the following configuration for laptops.

Hardware

  • At least 12 GB RAM and 1+ TB Storage (at least 512 K SSD hard-drive and 512K external storage
  • Either AMD 5000 or Intel 11th Gen processor
  • Video card supporting OpenGL 2+ standard
  • Monitor capable of supporting 1980 x 1080 resolution or higher

Note that these are minimums—more powerful, higher resolution systems are better.

Operating System

  • Windows 10+ operating system

MacOS is not recommended as it does not support many civil engineering programs.

Student Organizations

Department-level organizations include our student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a chapter of Chi Epsilon, the national civil engineering honor society.
