* Students choosing the thesis option will instead complete 21 hours of elective coursework accompanied by 6 hours of thesis credit.

Prerequisites:

Students will complete the following courses if they have not taken them, or their

equivalents, as undergraduates. When available, a graduate equivalent can be

taken to satisfy this requirement.

  • American Government (3-6 hours)
  • Introduction to Public Administration (3 hours)
  • Urban Politics (3 hours)
  • Statistics for Social Scientists (3 hours)

Additional Degree Requirements:

Students must pass both written and oral comprehensive examinations to fulfill graduate requirements.. Written examinations will consist of questions from each of the three members of the student’s examination committee. The oral examination will be conducted after submission of the written examination and will include each of the members of the student’s committee.

M.P.A. Thesis Option

Students may earn six of the 36 semester hours required of graduate work by successfully completing a Master’s thesis.  The thesis option includes completion of POLS 5390 (Thesis) in which the student constructs and presents a research design; undertakes a plan to complete research; and begins writing their thesis, and POLS 5391 during which the student completes the research, writing and defense of their Master’s thesis.
