Use of Candles and Other Open Flame Devices

POLICY

To preserve life safety and reduce the risk of fire as required by the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101), the use of candles and other open flame devices in ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ University buildings is prohibited unless specially approved through the Office of EHS & Risk Management. Open flames meeting the requirements for exceptions specified in the NFPA Life Safety Code will be authorized. 

Exceptions are available for:
  1. Educational and research purposes.
  2. Dining and food service areas
  3. Theatrical or other entertaining arts performances.
  4. Special religious ceremonies.
  5. Maintenance operations conducted under a hot work permit system.
