Department of Theatre and Dance to present Dance Unleashed

"Dance Unleashed," the LU Department of Theatre & Dance's annual spring faculty concert, will be held in Dance Unleashedthe University Theatre on April 23 & 24 at 7:30 p.m. and April 24 & 25 at 2 p.m. The mainstage performance will feature new creative works by the LUTD dance faculty and guest artist Marlana Doyle, executive artistic director and founder of Houston Contemporary Dance Company and the Institute for Contemporary Dance Houston. The audience can expect to see jazz, tap, modern and a variety of contemporary dance styles performed by the LUTD student company.

Tasked with the challenges of COVID safety protocols including dancers remaining socially distanced (aka no touching or partnering allowed) and dancing in masks, the choreographers took to the studio to generate thought provoking, emotionally stirring and entertaining works that would not only engage the audience but fulfill the research and development required in the creative process.

In "B-T-K-T " six dancers take the stage to express collective emotion through musical rhythm. Choreographic choices were inspired by the use of improvisation in Jazz music and how the musician adds texture to a piece of music adding notes to an underlying chord progression. In this case, the dancers become the musical improvisation to the pre-existing music. Dancers emphatically challenge the stage space, as well as their personal limits in this energetically athletic work choreographed by Travis Prokop, assistant professor of dance

An ode to the pioneers of postmodern dance, "Echo," choreographed by instructor of dance Amy Elizabeth, works to strip the dancer of emotion and the work of content by focusing on structural imagery, movement invention and choreographic design, while her work, "IN or OUT," a solo set on upperclassman ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵr Reed, pushes the dancer into an introspective state through riving intimate thoughts and external concerns.

Tickets for "Dance Unleashed" may be purchased online at or by calling the Box Office at 409-880-2250. General admission tickets are available for $15. LUTD remains in compliance with the LU COVID safety protocols by offering socially distant limited seating and asks all persons to wear a mask while inside an LU building.
