LU to host 2017 Golden Triangle Divisional STEM Competition
The 2017 Golden Triangle Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering (GT-TAME) Divisional STEM Competition will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017 at ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ University.
This year’s GT-TAME Divisional STEM Competition will host more than 100 students from Beaumont, Groves, Hamshire-Fannett, Orange and Port Arthur. Students will participate in a timed math and science test and ultimately compete in a hands-on engineering design challenge that simulates a real-world professional experience. The challenge requires each team of students to develop creative solutions using limited materials over a period of about one hour. Volunteers from ExxonMobil, Flint Hills Resources, Motiva, the U.S. Coast Guard, local school districts and ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ University College of Engineering will serve as test proctors and judges.
Annual TAME competitions are held across the state to encourage student achievement in math and science. The GT-TAME chapter, ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ University, and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ Chapter will host this year’s divisional qualifying competition for Texas Education Agency’s Region V students from participating TAME school clubs across the Golden Triangle.
The STEM competitions are an important part of TAME’s multi-pronged, age-appropriate approach to engaging student interest and achievement in science, technology, engineering and math. Through the development of a peer and mentor network, the competitions also provide a unique opportunity for students, many from rural and/or economically disadvantaged areas, to visit a college campus or an industrial facility and to interact with STEM role models.
TAME is a 501 © (3) non-profit organization that helps prepare Texas students for careers in science, technology, engineering, and math by providing K-12 students, parents, and teachers with STEM-related programs and resources. Working statewide, TAME promotes diversity in STEM careers through the focused recruitment of women and minorities underrepresented in STEM fields. While TAME programs specifically target underrepresented minorities and females, all Texas students are encouraged to participate.
