The poems in Ancilla are voiced by little-known figures who played ancillary roles in the lives of well-known artists, writers, scientists, philosophers, and musicians. One of the poems, "Mother of Invention," won the Fermoy International Poetry Festival competition. The award included a trip to County Cork, Ireland, where Murphy attended the awards ceremony and read her poetry in various venues, including an Irish Pub.

With Todd Davis, she is co-editor of Making Poems: Forty Poems with Commentary by the Poets (State University of New York Press, 2010), and with Jen Hirt, she is co-editor of Creating Nonfiction: Twenty Essays and Interviews with the Writers (State University of New York Press, 2016).
